learning to listen

Listening is an essential life skill. 'Listening' is different to 'hearing'. Where 'hearing' is the receiving of sounds, 'listening' is putting meaning to those sounds. Every child arriving at kindergarten benefits from being a good listener - when they're making friends, solving conflict, or learning - both in group situations and one-to-one. When a child can listen effectively they are better equipped to make sense of our big exciting world.

Some children are born natural listeners. Around one in five children is an 'auditory learner', preferring to learn through their ears, as opposed to 'visual' - their eyes, or 'kinaesthetic' - their hands (or a combination of these). But every child needs to develop the ability to understand the messages hidden within what they hear, and the earlier they do this, the better.

Good listeners have learnt how to listen. Although we’re born with ears - having an ability to listen is something we learn from our early caregivers. The first three years of life are an incredibly important developmental stage. Along with taking in a phenomenal amount of information, it is during these years that a child creates learning habits they will carry with them through school and later in life. Start training your child as early as possible.
